As we begin the Christmas season, Christmas decorations begin to light up all across the constituency.

Whilst this is a season for cheer and celebration for many this will not be case. My thoughts go to those who can’t be with their loved ones this year, perhaps because of a loss, illness or distance.

Whilst I write this, I also think in particular of the many servicemen and women stationed abroad and of the families who lost their loved one at war.

I also think of my recent visit as Health Minister to Cumbria where I went to see the devastation of the aftermath of the most severe flooding in history in Cockermouth.

Residents of that area have been heavily affected by the floods and it will be sometime before they are able to return to their homes. What was truly visible was the sense of community spirit amongst the local residents.

The emergency authorities will be working with them trying to rebuild their homes right into the new year. It is during these difficult times that I am amazed of the kindred spirit that communities develop and the relentless efforts of the emergency authorities to work together and support those in real need.

Many of them will be working over the Christmas period across the country and my gratitude and thoughts go to them for their willingness to give up their time for the wellbeing of others. In the past, I have also worked during the Christmas period and I therefore understand their commitment of being able to be there when needed the most.

Whilst Christmas is the most widely celebrated season of the year, I know that other religions and cultures too have much cause for celebration. Indeed, I am aware that my constituency is home to a large population, who recently have shared with use their celebrations for Diwali or Eid. My thoughts go out to all, whatever you have planned for this season, but above all enjoy spending time with family and friends and that the festive celebrations are peaceful and happy.

Finally, I know this year locally it has been full of activity and a very eventful one nationally and across the world. I look forward to continuing my work in the New Year and as always please don't hesitate to get in touch if I can help you with any problems, I'm always happy to help.
I wish you and all your family and friends a joyful Christmas and Happy New Year.
