A young New Zealander has died in hospital after spending a week in a coma following a road traffic accident.

Police say Daniel Tiplady was hit by a bus outside Shepherd's Bush Police Station when he was on his way back from watching the Boat Race on Sunday 29 March.

The 24-year-old's parents, Maureen and Kevin, were at his hospital bedside when he died at the weekend and family and friends in his hometown were said to be mourning his loss.

Tiplady, who was from the New Zealand port city of Timaru, travelled through Europe before settling in London where he worked as an engineer.

As Tiplady lay unconscious in a coma, around 250 people joined a Facebook group called "Prayers are with Daniel Tiplady and his family".

His former employer, Parr & Co managing director Damon Odey, posted a message which read: “You became an exceptional tradesman but above that you were a great guy.”

Tiplady's family are said to be setting up a trust account to help out with the costs involved in taking the body back to New Zealand.
